Boston’s quality of life was recognized in the October issue of Money magazine, which named it as the best large city in the northeast, and one of the best large cities in the U.S. The analysis by Money magazine included a review of 63 U.S. cities with a population over 300,000.
Money magazine credits the completion of the “Big Dig” as the stimulus behind Boston’s renewal. The Big Dig was controversial, expensive, and rife with problems, but it gave rise to the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway, and has helped draw billions of dollars in urban renewal and redevelopment.
The tech and life sciences boom of recent years has helped boost Boston’s population, which increased by 8% since 2010, double the national average. With an estimated 2016 population of just under 658,000, Boston still boasts one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country at 4.2%.
While the cost of housing in Boston is admittedly high, with a median home price of $545,000, our world-class amenities are second to none. According to Money magazine, Boston has the highest per-capita arts funding of any of the 63 cities examined. Cultural offerings include the famous Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Ballet, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the New England Aquarium and the Boston Children’s Museum. Boston is also home to a wide variety of festivals and special events throughout the year.
Boston has a wealth of historic sites and landmarks, which draw tourism to the city. The Boston Common, established in 1634, is the oldest public park in the nation.
Some of the most respected universities in the world are located in the Boston Metro area. Four members of the Association of American Universities are in Greater Boston, including Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston University, and Brandeis University. Greater Boston has more than 100 colleges and universities, with 250,000 students enrolled in Boston and Cambridge alone.
