The number of residents living in the Boston Metro is nearing the 5 million mark, according to the latest Census Bureau estimates, as reported in Boston Curbed. Current estimates place Boston Metro’s population at 4,875,390, making it the tenth most populated metro in the U.S.
Not all major metros saw population growth. The three largest metros, consisting of New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago, all posted population declines from 2017 to 2018. Meanwhile, the population in the Boston Metro area increased from 4,844,597 to 4,875,390 during the same period.
Looking back to 2010, the Boston Metro population was estimated at 4,552,598. The region has been posting measurable population gains on a year-over-year basis for nearly the past decade.
The population increase comes with some growing pains. Boston Metro home prices have been escalating for years. The length of our average commute time has increased to about 29 minutes. During special events, our weekend population in the City of Boston can reach 2 million people!
Increased demand for goods, housing, and services contribute to our area’s economic momentum. Our world-class institutions of higher learning continue to draw the best and brightest students from around the globe, who often remain in our area for career opportunities. This progressive pattern has shown no signs of slowing down.
