The economic climate in Massachusetts and the Boston Metro continues to spur job growth, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Boston Business Journal. From January 2017 to January 2018, the seasonally-adjusted jobless rate in Massachusetts fell from 3.9% to 3.5%. Nationally, the year-over-year jobless rate fell from 4.8% to 4.1%.
According to state-by-state labor statistics, Massachusetts ranks 17th in seasonally-adjusted employment. On a year-over-year basis, Massachusetts saw the greatest job attrition in government employment, and in trade, transportation and utility sectors. The highest job gains were made in the following industries:
- Construction: +4.8%
- Leisure and Hospitality: +2.7%
- Professional, Scientific and Business Services: +2.4%
Other Massachusetts industries that maintained employment levels, or made modest gains on a year-over-year basis, include financial services, manufacturing, information technology, health services and education.
