As a business owner in the Boston Metro area, what is your strategy when your employees need a morale boost? Even the best employees at great companies sometimes need a little pick-me-up, and it doesn’t necessarily need to be in the form of time off or monetary compensation. A recent article in Inc. Magazine gives some great ideas for things that you can say when employees seem to be down and out. Here are our four favorites:
- “I need your help.” While you may think that asking for help shows a weakness, the opposite is usually true! Asking an employee for help shows that you trust their judgment and appreciate their skills – which may be just what they need to feel that you value their contributions.
- “What do you think?” Simply asking for employee input can make a dramatic impact on morale. Instead of feeling like they are being told what to do, employees will feel included and valued. Even if you don’t implement all of their suggestions, they’ll still probably feel that it’s nice to be able to voice their opinions.
- “It’s ok. We all make mistakes.” There’s no gain in berating an employee who makes a mistake. Though it might be difficult, it’s important to remember that the employee probably feels bad for the mistake that he or she made, and getting angry will only harm his or her impression of you and your company. It’s a better idea to try and focus on preventing the mistake from happening again.
- “I know you can do it.” Do you challenge your employees regularly? Giving them that extra vote of confidence can go a long way when it comes to morale. Let them know that you’re aware that the task at hand may be challenging, but that you’re confident they can do it. Everyone benefits from encouragement!
