There are many perks for small to medium sized companies that come along with giving back to the surrounding community. For example, a study by Ernst & Young and the Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund found that 62% of business owners say giving back makes their companies more successful in the long run. Getting involved with a local charity can also give your business a positive public image. But what if you and your employees are low on funds? Here are three great ways that your business can get involved without shelling out large donations.
1. Donate your time. Put your business skills to work! Check out local nonprofit organizations and see if your skills would be valuable to their Board of Directors. For example, a nonprofit may be looking for someone to help with accounting, or they may need the help of a graphic designer. Take a look around to see if there’s a need that you can fill!
2. Involve customers. This works especially well if your business has a storefront. Keep a collection box out on the counter for your favorite local charity. Customers will appreciate your efforts to improve your surrounding community, and a collection box makes it easy for them to donate spare change.
3. Involve employees. Choose a day or two each year (or more often if you can) and volunteer as a company. You might help pass out food at a local food bank or cook a meal at a homeless shelter. Volunteering together is also a great way to encourage a team atmosphere among your employees.
