Each year, U.S. News & World Report examines 150 metro areas in the United States to name the “Best Places to Live.” These “best” lists are based on quality of life, cost of living, employment opportunities and the overall popularity of the area, based on inbound migration.

For the 2021-2022 review, Boston ranks #13 in the “Safest Places to Live” category, out of 150 metros. Boston is among the best large cities in the U.S. for public safety, based on FBI statistics of violent crime rates and property crime rates per 100,000 people.

Boston ranks #25 out of 150 metros for “Best Places to Live for Quality of Life.” This ranking measures how satisfied residents are with their daily lives, including the quality and availability of health care, quality and accessibility of education, public amenities and average commute time. It should be noted that our commute time is a bit longer than the national average, which likely kept us out of the top 20.

When it comes to the category of “Best Places to Live” overall, Boston came in at #31 out of 150 metros. Boston scores highly for job opportunities, quality of life, education and medical care. But our home prices and residential rents are higher than the national average, which makes our cost of living more expensive.

Boston is a historic, dynamic city that has proven resilient against the Great Recession and the global pandemic. The Boston Metro remains one of the world’s best areas to live in – and one of the world’s best areas for business opportunity!
