What is it that makes an employee happy at his or her place of work?  It’s a tough question for many small to medium sized business owners.  While there are many factors that contribute to an employee’s level of satisfaction with his or her job, one factor that comes up over and over again is appreciation.  Most employees are greatly motivated by recognition and appreciation.  So, as a Boston Metro area business owner, how can you begin to create a culture of appreciation for your employees?  Here are 4 easy ways to get started.

  1. Make it regular. This is important, and doesn’t just mean an annual review.  Recognizing your employees on a regular basis will help to reinforce their belief that they are appreciated and valued within the workplace.
  2. Mix it up. Sometimes, a simple spoken thank you in private is the perfect way to show your appreciation.  Other times, a public shout out in front of other co-workers is the best way to give praise for a job well done and motivate other employees to do the same.  You can keep it short and sweet, and mix things up every once in a while to keep it interesting.
  3. Make it personal. It’s great to acknowledge a team of employees for a job well done.  It’s even better to dig in and find something that each employee did that helped the team succeed.  Showing appreciation for both team and individual successes can go a long way!
  4. Get the team involved. Create a program where employees can recognize other team members!  Shout outs from the boss are great, but sometimes a shout out from another team member can do wonders for employee engagement as well.  Get creative and find out what works best for your team, whether it’s a bulletin board, email program or some other form of recognition.
