Sometimes thinking big means starting small! Small businesses are an important part of Boston’s commercial landscape, and they play a big role in our state economy.

According to the Small Business Administration, there were 582,623 small businesses operating in Massachusetts during 2009. Small businesses account for an astounding 97.9% of all employers, and employ 47.3% of the private-sector workforce!

How small is small? Per the SBA, a small business is defined as having fewer than 500 employees. If you want to split hairs, most small businesses in Massachusetts are very small, with 76.4% having no employees outside of the owners. The majority of small businesses with employees have fewer than 20 of them on the payroll.

Despite this, small businesses in Massachusetts employed 1.4 million workers in 2009! Most of these are in the mid-range of small businesses, in firms having anywhere from 20 employees to 499 of them.

There has been a growing trend towards self-employment and small business ownership in the past several years. If you have an idea you’ve been kicking around, or you’ve been dabbling in self-employment “on the side” and want to grow your business, there are great small businesses resources right here in Boston!

The Massachusetts Business Office of the SBA has a ton of information, from loans, laws, programs, business education, grants, and more. You might be surprised by the amount of help that’s here for the asking!

The Boston SCORE Chapter provides FREE confidential business counseling. Supported by the SBA and staffed by volunteers with real-world business experience, SCORE helps new entrepreneurs make good business decisions to achieve profitability. They offer low-cost business workshops to help you hit the ground running, and the next one is coming up January 17!
